Flap Happy was founded over 30 years ago by designer Laurie Lipson Snyder, a Malibu native and mother of four. After Laurie was diagnosed with skin cancer in her early 20’s, she started the business with the purpose of shielding her children’s faces and necks from the sun’s harmful UV rays with a protective hat that no other company in the marketplace was offering. This specialty recycled fabric starts with post-consumer plastic bottles which are washed and chopped into flakes, then melted and formed into chips, which are melted again and made into fibers. This innovative fabrication also offers UPF 50+ sun protection without any chemical additives. Each item Flap Happy makes from recycled plastic bottles recycles 4 plastic bottles on average.
