Our goal is to achieve sustainability and energy efficiency not at the expense of economic benefit and through high infrastructural investments, but through intelligent, data-based virtual energy system cybernetics. As a spin-off of the Technical University of Darmstadt, we have already dealt with governance issues of complex systems in various research projects over the past years. Our conclusion: Regardless of whether it is an industrial park, a housing estate, an urban grid or a balancing group – wherever energy is stored and/or exchanged and energy (money and CO2) flows are to be controlled, a central, omnipresent and intelligent decision maker is needed. For complex energy systems, there are a vast number of operational decision alternatives that are constantly changing due to altering environmental conditions. In order to find the economically or ecologically best decision out of this multitude of alternatives at any time, it is necessary to employ methods of applied mathematics.
