Gal Xlokk

The foundation Gal Xlokk is a public-private partnership. The foundation was brought together to participate actively in the Leader Initiative. Some of the Partners are: Birzebbugia Local Council Ghaxaq Local Council Gudja Local Council Kirkop Local Council Luqa Local Council Marsascala Local Council Marsaxlokk Local Council Xghajra Local Council Zejtun Local Council Qrendi Local Council Qormi Local Council Carmelo Desira Economics Department University of Malta Falcon Tours Ltd Malta Organic Agricultural Movement (MOAM) Maypole Bakery and Polidano Brothers The localities forming this foundation represent a population of people and an area of 42.2km². Although all localities share homogeneity in terms of geo-demographics and rural communities each particular locality has got its own history and characteristics. The Labour force from this area was concentrated in the shipyards located in the Grand Harbour at Cottonera. However, with the structural changes in the labour market, today substantial numbers of residents work at the Bulebel Industrial Estate in Zejtun, Luqa Industrial Estate, Luqa International Airport, San Vincenz De Paule in Luqa, and in the service industry such as restaurants in Marsascala, Birzebbugia and Marsaxlokk. GAL Xlokk represents a leading area in livestock management. The region is also a major producer of potatoes, cultivation of vines, feeds for livestock and rabbit breeding.
