Genesis Housing Development Corporation

Genesis Housing Development Corporation (GHDC) was founded in 1997 as a faith-based, not-for-profit organization located in and serving the area known as “Bronzeville”. We also serve surrounding communities including: Greater Grand Crossing, Washington Park, Chatham, Avalon Park and South Shore. Our strategy is to build communities through 1) education 2) housing development and 3) sustainable housing by providing services such as personal credit management, homeowner and foreclosure counseling, construction trades training and building and rehabbing sustainable housing. We augment our programs to include financial literacy and business development, Employer Assisted Housing counseling, construction job placement, contractor development, and home maintenance and repair for low-income seniors. GHDC serves 300-400 people annually and continues to be a voice and a resource for Chicago communities and residents. We have built and sold 30 newly constructed affordable housing units, 2 market rate housing units, 2 “green” energy-efficient homes, and rehabbed five single family homes. We are responsible for building 18 CHA units and placing over 140 youth into jobs. We are a Certified CHDO, a HUD certified foreclosure and housing counseling agency, a delegate agency to the City of Chicago in various programs, an agent of the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Op, and a recipient of a $2.2 million Neighborhood Stabilization Grant to address foreclosed properties in our target community.
