With heating capacity ranging from 3500-4500kcal, bio-coal can serve as a substitute to black coal in industrial boilers and brick kilns for thermal application. We produce Biomass Briquettes of sizes 60mm and 90 mm in diameter and length min 75 to max 300 mm. Compared to fire wood or loose biomass, briquettes give a much higher boiler efficiency because of low moisture and higher density. Briquettes have high specific and bulk density of (1200 Kg/m3) and bulk density (800 Kg/m3) compared to 60 to 180 Kg/m3 of loose bio coal. The Biomass Briquette industry has not been around for since long in India. Earlier, there was no organised use of the groundnut shells generated. A very small percentage of it was used to fire small capacity boilers and rest was burnt on the farm fields. It was all done in a highly unorganised and uncontrolled manner which caused high levels of pollution and energy losses. With the growth in biomass briquetting industry these pollution and energy losses are now under great control. This also adds value to the agro-waste generated; resulting in an increase in the farmers’ net income. Raw materials can be produced domestically in India, creating a fuel source that is free from foreign dependence and less polluting than raw fossil fuel incineration. Combustion is more uniform as compared to coal. Due to high quality of volatile matter, boiler response to volatile matter is faster. Environmentally, the use of biomass briquettes produces much fewer greenhouse gases, specifically,13.8% to 41.7% CO2 and NOX.
