South Africa is a good example of a country that benefits from the sustainability services offered by GREGCo. Although there has been work carried out by the South African energy regulator (NERSA), utility (Eskom) and the Department of Energy resulting in a pipeline of new build plans, the reality remains that South Africa’s energy generation infrastructure is behind schedule and this is compounded by dated and unreliable infrastructure as is evidenced by Eskom’s 49bn Rand infrastructure expansion and replacement plan for the period 2011 to 2020. As a country South Africa has been fortunate from an energy demand perspective that growth has slowed and the direct impact of a growing economy on energy demand has been softened to some extent. The fact remains that 2011 will be one of many years in South Africa and other countries across the continent where load shedding becomes the norm and the cost of electricity increases exponentially.
