Growsel is an award-winning nonprofit agricultural crowdfunding organization that connects underserved Base of the Pyramid smallholder farmers with lenders around the globe to alleviate poverty. Founded in 2017, Growsel has vigorously pursued its mission of "changing lives and creating opportunities" for financially excluded smallholder farmers who cannot reconcile their economic realities with the enormous potentials in their local communities, thereby helping them upscale their subsistence agriculture, a feat which saw it win the 2018 Visa Everywhere Initiative Award for Financial Inclusion. The Problem There are estimated 500 million smallholder farming households globally,(representing 2 billion people) relying to various degrees on subsistence agricultural production for their livelihoods. This group represents the largest proportion of the world's poor living on less than $2 a day.
