הכפר הירוק ע"ש לוי אשכול הוא פינת חמד ירוקה ופורחת בלב אזור המרכז בין רמת השרון לתל אביב. הכפר נוסד ב-1950. מייסדו, גרשון זק היה מפקדו הראשון של חיל הים ויועצו של דוד בן גוריון לענייני תכנון ובנייה. החזון שהדריך את גרשון זק בהקמת כפר נוער, היה חזונה של הציונות הסוציאליסטית החלוצית והצורך בשילובם ובקידומם של צעירים עולים בחברה הישראלית המתחדשת. הוא רצה להקים כפר נוער שיהא בו משהו ייחודי : שתהיה בו חברת נוער עצמאית ובעלת תחומי פעולה מוגדרים הנמסרים לה בשלמותם, ללא זכות התערבות המבוגרים - פרט לבריאות, לביטחון ולבית הספר. גישה זו הייתה אחת מאבני היסוד של החינוך החברתי שהיה ייחודי לכפר הירוק.
