High Point Leap

HIGH POINT LEAP (Literacy Empowers All People) is a non-profit, 501c3 grassroots, multicultural dropout intervention program focused on uplifting children and families through literacy. We believe that education is a ladder out of poverty and we seek to hold up the ladder for children and families. Leap’s mission is to empower children from K-12th grade living in poverty to succeed academically while developing skills to become 21st Century Leaders and to strengthen their families through literacy programs and educational resources. Claire and Michael Robinson founded the program in 2013. They began tutoring one child in a church who was struggling in school, and the program has quickly grown to serve 200 children each week in afterschool tutoring programs at five sites across the city. We focus our efforts in the ZIP code 27260, where 40% of residents live below the poverty line and 48% of households face food insecurity. LEAP offers wrap-around services to the whole family. Children ages K-12th grade can participate in LEAP STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) afterschool tutoring, Boys2Men mentoring, robotics, tech classes, Design for Change, and academic summer camp at no cost. Adults may participate in free financial literacy, GED, and ESOL classes, while their children ages 3-4 spend time with LEAP staff practicing early literacy. The children we work with are bright and enthusiastic learners, and we need your help to give them the power to succeed through literacy and character development.
