Hope Center Uganda
Hope Centre Uganda (HCU) was first conceived in 2015 when founders Jamie and Ella travelled to Gulu to intern for Women’s Global Empowerment Fund (WGEF) and Volunteer Action Network (VACNET). They noticed that despite the high number of existing Non-Governmental Organisations operating in Gulu there was a lack of programs to address children’s education outside of often underfunded and overcrowded schools. From these roots Jamie and Ella joined forces with VACNET employee and Gulu local Kevin Okumu to research the issue. Together they decided that a specialised program that offered literacy, arts, and tech classes would fulfill some of the burgeoning community’s needs. By July 2015 HCU was registered as a Ugandan NGO and funding was secured by Jamie and Ella to purchase a two-acre plot of land in an area that is safe and accessible to nearby schools which will soon become the home of HCU’s Hope Resource Centre.
