Hrc Prevention

HRC Prevention is a SAPP grant funded organization offering a variety of services to Edgar and Clark counties. HRC Prevention focuses on three main areas of service; youth prevention education, coalition involvement, and youth mentoring services. In addition, HRC Prevention hosts a summer program for area youth. HRC Prevention is currently teaching the Too Good for Drugs Program in the following area schools; Martinsville, Marshall, Kansas, Crestwood, and Shiloh. The Too Good for Drugs program is offered to 5th and 6th graders and focuses on establishing goal-setting, decision-making, and effective communication skills in youth. The program also focuses on building skills to refuse peer pressure, pro-social bonding, conflict resolution, and media literacy. The program is evidence based and draws from several theoretical foundations; including the Social Learning Theory, the Problem Behavior Theory, the Health Behavior Theory, the Social Developmental Model, and the 40 Developmental Assests. HRC Prevention works in conjunction with the local CAMA group. Within CAMA, HRC Prevention works to develope and set agendas, facilitate monthly meetings, plan the annual Prevention Providers breakfast, and works within the community to outreach and facilitate stategic prevention framework. CAMA meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend. HRC Prevention is working to develop youth mentoring programs in two area schools; Martinsville and Chrisman. The mentoring programs works to introduce middle school students to mentors from their community. The program is currently school based, with mentors being asked to dedicate one hour per week for one-on-one mentoring with their selected student. HRC Prevention Specialists receive training by the DHS (Department of Human Services) and are active in establishing the mentor/mentee relationship. HRC Prevention is currently seeking mentors in both Clark and Edgar Counties.
