The #IamIrish Project Launched in 2016 with the critically acclaimed #IamIrish photographic exhibition since its conception it has grown from strength to strength, making appearances in London Irish Centre, London City Hall, Galway Arts Centrer, Axis Arts Centre Dublin and The Irish Centre NewYork. IamIrish is a not for profile community project. It is for the best part unfunded and run completely by volunteers. We exist to challenge perception of what it looks and sounds like to be Irish and open’s up people’s minds to the wonderful diversity of the Irish people. At the heart of this movement is a desire for a fair and equal society, where your worth is not determined by the colour of your skin, your economic backdrop or your parentage.#IamIrish seeks to dispel the idea that if you are from a non white community you are automatically an immigrant. The core values that underpin IamIrish are Empowerment of minorities by giving a voice and a platform to untold or hidden stories. Promotion and celebration of diversity within the global Irish diaspora. Tackling racism and ‘othering’ of minority communities at home in Ireland and in the UK. Celebration of Irish arts and culture. Exploring our shared heritage and celebrating multicultural society. Challenging perceptions of what it looks like to be Irish. Iamirish was conceived in response to the 2016 EU referendum in Great Britain and the subsequent rise in racially motivated hate crime. IamIrish seeks to combat a lack of representation of the Afro-Irish experience, challenge perceptions of what it looks like to be Irish, and to dispel the idea that if you appear to be from a non-white community you are automatically an immigrant. As well as our work in communities IamIrish offers consultation, Training, strategic support and workshops around race relations, diversity and inclusion.
