Iita Bbest Project
Known for its economic and environmental benefits, the Black Soldier Fly is an insect which during its larval stage voraciously feed on organic waste to produce economically viable products: dried larvae, used in animal feed production and frass used in vegetable production. The BSF for Bio Circular Economy and Environmental Sustainability BBEST is an IITA -led project implemented in Ghana, Mali Niger and DR Congo. The overall objective the BBEST project is to improve the livelihoods of smallholder chicken, fish, pig, and vegetable producers, and other value chain actors and contribute to improved urban sanitation and climate change mitigation. This will be achieved through the development of operational models to demonstrate the profitability of using organic waste to produce black soldier fly larvae, for incorporation into livestock and fish feed, and use as organic fertilizer in agriculture.
