In Silico Fermentation (ISF) serves the biotechnology and biomedical industries by providing consulting services, applied research and educational training on microbial systems and processes. ISF specializes in the development and deployment of microbial metabolic models for applications in biomanufacturing and human health. ISF has developed a novel workflow that enables genome-scale metabolic reconstructions to be embedded within high fidelity simulation models of biochemical reactors and microbial communities. These models can be used to embed proprietary knowledge, enhance fundamental understanding and manipulate system behavior. ISF also has substantial expertise developing simpler unstructured metabolic models for predicting microbial growth and product formation kinetics in fermentation processes. These models can be used to predict bioreactor dynamics, develop real-time estimation and control strategies, and optimize process performance. ISF expertise in the domain of biochemical reactors includes: 1. Gas Fermentation – We pioneered the use of genome-scale metabolic models to simulate gas fermentation reactors. Mixed-Microbial Cultures – We offer extensive experience developing pure- and mixed-culture bioreactor models for bioconversion applications. Engineered Biofilms – We pioneered the use of metabolic reconstructions for simulating renewable chemical synthesis in pure- and mixed-culture biofilms. ISF expertise in the domain of microbial communities includes: 1. Multispecies biofilms – We developed a novel modeling framework to predict spatial organization and metabolic interactions of microbes within multispecies biofilms. Human gut microbiome – We have substantial experience developing and interrogating community metabolic models of the human gut microbiota. Disease associated communities – We offer expertise in the development of community metabolic models to perform in silico analyses of disease-associated microbiota.
