Or snuggled up in a disused railway carriage adjacent to the Glenfinnan Viaduct? 35 years ago, Sam Dalley a keen cyclist and traveller, gathered together a list of 20 hostels she had visited up and down the UK. And collated them into the very first Independent Hostel Guide. Fifteen of the twenty hostels on the list agreed to fund the booklet and off it went to the photocopiers. Soon many more hostels wanted to join and book sales rose into the thousands and the professional guidebook was born within the year. 35 Independent Hostel Guides later, Independent Hostels is a flourishing network that provides marketing through a website, guidebook, social networking and attendance at shows and events. We have published 35 guides which continue to be a valuable resource of UK hostels. Beginning in 2010, we had a four year relationship with Berghaus. In 2013 we held a conference, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the first Independent Hostel Guide. In 2014 IHUK gained the GOLD award from the Green Tourism business scheme, 2018 Ordnance Survey agreed to mark the locations of the Independent Hostels on their maps, and in 2024 the IH network held a parliamentary reception at Westminster. The network is a community space for hostel owners to support each other and aims to promote all accommodation providers equally from small rural setups to the large city hostels.
