Children have a passion for adventure. Well, I suppose we all do. But these days, adventure stories are certainly not what they were a century ago. Back then, things were tamer and more appropriate for younger audiences. Parents could permit their children to read books without too much fear of unsettling nightmares keeping them awake at night. Today’s adventure stories on the other hand have a different twist. Whether it be vampires, zombies, ghouls, witches, aliens, or just hideous monsters in general: evil and the macabre have become commonplace and the prevailing theme in bookstores and theatres today. Adventures have become disproportionately associated with the good hero pitted against pure malevolence and notorious evil. Once brilliant dialogue is now replaced with sensationalism, as Hollywood profits on dwelling in the deepest and darkest levels of hell to portray the perfect arch villain. It seems appropriate therefore—and timely, that a new series of adventure stories rise to the surface emphasizing sound morals and ethics while instilled with the passion and energy necessary to sustain attention. This does not mean to suggest the element of evil must be avoided in literature, for we can no more have good without evil than light without darkness, but that evil should be left more to the imagination and less graphically illustrated. Children deserve more innocence in literature today. The goal of Innocence Publishing is to make that happen.
