A Storied Legacy of Hospitality on Cape Breton’s Bras d’Or Lake Inverary Resort’s history dates back to the late 1800s, when Cape Breton native “Millionaire” MacNeil built his grand estate on the shores of the Bras d’Or Lake. Fueled by his Boston-earned fortune, MacNeil’s 11-acre property overlooked his childhood home of Washabuck and quickly became a showpiece in Baddeck. Inverary’s hospitality legacy began after World War II when brothers Chad and Jamie Fownes, alongside their mother, purchased the estate and founded Inverary Inn. Inspired by their Scottish heritage, they named it after Inveraray Castle, home of the Duke of Argyll and Clan Campbell. Since then, Inverary has welcomed generations of guests, many feeling a deep connection to their ancestral homeland. A new chapter began in 1971 when the MacAulay family took the helm. Isobel and Dannie MacAulay continued the tradition of warm hospitality, and their son, Scott, became Innkeeper in 1979. Under his leadership, the property grew into the full-service resort it is today. Now in its third generation of family management, Matthew MacAulay continues to lead with passion and a commitment to excellence.
