Established in 1990, Jacaranda Designs specializes in creating effective capacity-building learning and behaviour change communication strategies, social messages plus instructional tools using print, IT and electronic media platforms to promote practical action to improve education, health and the environment in Africa—responding to the priorities, interests and needs of young people. Most young Africans today—estimated as 420 million people, comprising the majority of Africa’s population and the majority of those living in poverty—are facing a dire future unless they have immediate, ample access to quality learning opportunities that will equip them with practical skills and useful information. This is essential in building their capacities to participate in advancing socio-economic growth—across all sectors—and this massive cohort can’t be left behind! For this reason, our core business is creating and publishing the Young African Express—a bi-monthly colourful 24-page curriculum-based newsmagazine. As a ‘textbook in newsprint’ each issue offers up-to-date opportunities for learning relevant and practical information, skills and useful competencies—focusing on health, hygiene & sanitation, food gardens, entrepreneurship and science, technology & ICT as well as environmental stewardship plus civics, conflict resolution and Human Rights. We support the principles of education for sustainable development—by equipping young Africans with the useful skills, attitudes and knowledge to empower their self-confidence in forging productive lives, bringing quality of life benefits to people, the planet and Africa’s sustainable future.
