South Africa’s teacher workforce is under acute pressure. Growing evidence points to high levels of burnout and attrition, with many teachers considering leaving the profession due to overwhelming workloads, administrative burdens, and limited psychosocial support. The shortage is felt most sharply in under-resourced schools and in key subjects. For Jakes Gerwel Fellowship (JGF), this is not only a pipeline problem, it is a professional identity and wellbeing problem. In this context, accessible, high-quality professional development becomes a critical safeguard for the profession itself. When teachers can routinely participate in meaningful learning opportunities, they are more likely to stay, grow and lead in their classrooms and communities. JGF works with early-career teachers, providing them with wraparound support, coaching and professional development opportunities to become reflective practitioners who contribute to positive, systemic change in South Africa’s education landscape. The Jakes Gerwel Fellowship programme seeks to nurture and support the aspirations of talented young South Africans, from demographically diverse communities, who are committed and passionate about the future of their country, and who have the potential to make a positive impact in education in South Africa. Underpinning the drive of the Jakes Gerwel Fellowship is a strong belief in the transformative impact of an expert teacher, and the role that enhanced educational opportunities can play in social transformation and the development of a more equitable and inclusive society.
