J. Goodin, Inc. was founded in 1985 when a young entrepreneurial couple decided to continue the family legacy of jewelry-making in Downtown Los Angeles. It began as a small outfit for filigree and polishing work. Laurance Cheng, president and CEO, had learned the artform of jewelry-making in Taiwan, from a family with a long tradition of quality craftsmanship in fine jewelry. He and his wife, Jenny, had emigrated to the US to seek opportunity and a chance to build the American dream. What began as a small operation quickly blossomed into a wholesale and distribution outlet in 1990 when the old family business shifted from manufacturing solely fine jewelry to include costume jewelry that was much more affordable for the general public. Laurance"s commitment to the arts and the fine-tuning of his trade meshed perfectly with Jenny"s expertise in sales and business operation. Fashion jewelry was dramatically changing. An industry bent on producing low-cost, low-concept jewelry transformed as the old family melded the technique and expertise of fine jewelry with the low-commitment, low-risk cost of costume jewelry. By 1995, the industry made yet another shift to China where labor was less expensive. J. Goodin, Inc. ventured to China to establish trade relationships with a new generation of jewelry producers that were excited to learn. In 1996, J. Goodin, Inc. invested in a new factory operation in Dong Guan, China. The main interest of this partnership was to produce exclusive designs that were rich with style. By 1997, J. Goodin, Inc. had established partnerships with 3 factories in China and had become an industry leader in jewelry design and manufacturing. In 2003, J. Goodin, Inc. founded its own factory operation in China. This factory would be committed to producing the highest quality costume and sterling silver jewelry for its customers.
