Joensuu Biocoal
Joensuu Biocoal Ltd is constructing the largest industrial-scale biomass torrefaction plant in Europe. The end-product is called biocoal and can be supplied as briquetted or loose. Biocoal is produced through a thermal process called torrefaction, where the biomass is heated in a low-oxygen atmosphere at temperatures of 300 °C - 400 °C. The plant enters production in Q4/2024 and upon completion, the plant's production capacity at full speed will be tons of biocoal per year. The biocoal plant is located next to the biomass fuelled CHP plant of Savon Voima in Joensuu, Finland. The briquette has excellent energy and bulk densities: 22-23 MJ/kg and 850 kg/loose m3. Biocoal is a ready-to-use substitute for replacing up-to-100% fossil carbon in energy-intensive, high energy demanding industries, such as cement and steel manufacturing. Replacing fossil carbon with Joensuu Biocoal green carbon can substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.
