John Petropoulos Memorial Fund

John Petropoulos was born on May 13, 1968, in Calgary, Canada. He married his girlfriend of eight years, Maryanne Pope, in July of 1996, and later that same year fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer with the Calgary Police Service. On September 29, Constable John Petropoulos passed away in the line of duty in a preventable workplace incident. While investigating a break and enter complaint, John stepped through a false ceiling and fell nine feet into a lunchroom below. There was no safety railing to warn him of the danger. He succumbed to his injuries at just 32 years old. John’s death was not an accident; it was preventable. His loss left behind family, friends, and colleagues who knew that a simple safeguard could have saved his life. In response, several of John’s recruit classmates established the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund (JPMF) to ensure what happened to John never happens to another worker. PRESERVING JOHN’S LEGACY As a police officer, John wanted to make a difference. He was passionate about enforcing the law to keep Calgary a safe place to live, work, and visit. Today, enforcement of the law is an important part of honouring his memory. By raising awareness at the industry and organizational level, and by advocating for enforcement of the Criminal Code in serious workplace incidents, we preserve John’s legacy and drive systemic change. A CATALYST FOR CHANGE Enforcement of the Criminal Code provides a powerful catalyst for elevating workplace safety standards. It compels organizations to integrate prevention into everyday work practices, leading to better safety outcomes and better business.
