Evidence lead tree advice in a language you can understand. I began practical tree work in Ealing after graduating in 1980. I moved on to the professional ladder as the Arboricultural Assistant in Northampton in 1982. The step-change in my career occurred in 1996 when I became Technical Director of the Arboricultural Association. Much of the role was outward-facing – managing relationships, negotiating with all interests – I learnt a lot about the breadth and depth of the discipline. A spell in the commercial world followed as the head of a national tree contracting business, trying to meet targets, maintain good relationships with clients and win more business. The opportunity to establish my own independent practice came in 2011 following yet another regime change. Since then I have provided a range of arboricultural support services, for example: • analysis, critique and review of third party expert testimony, • development site tree surveys to BS 5837:2012, • enterprise-wide tree risk management strategies, • Tree Officer roles for two local planning authorities, • method statements and codes of practice to support tender submissions, • preparation of schedules of rates for tree services, • preparation of tender actions for tree work services, • preparation of lectures at Level 6 for arboricultural students, • sustainable tree and woodland management, • tree hazard assessments and management recommendations, • understanding of the legal framework that protects trees. Clients have included: • an agricultural college and various schools, • architects, builders, developers and project managers, • charities and heritage bodies, • ecological consultants, planning consultants, • local planning authorities, • parish councils, housing trusts and local authorities, • multi-site, multi-function support service providers, • private individuals, and • schools.
