Just One Thing

As part of its commitment to create mutual prosperity Bank Australia undertook a series of roundtable discussions in 2014 to gain a greater understanding of the issues relevant to its customers and stakeholders in the City of Latrobe. The key issue was identified as being "young people disengaged and disempowered from employment and education." Bank Australia committed funding for a three-year period to undertake a project - Latrobe Youth Choices - that would assist in addressing this issue using a collective impact approach. The Youth Choices Steering Committee adopted the concept of 'Just One Thing' for the project and consultants were engaged to test whether this concept would be helpful to young people. Eight focus groups of young people were held and the participants were asked to discuss the following questions- What does the Latrobe Valley look like in 2026- Where are you in 2026- What are you doing- How did you get there- Who helped you get there- If you're not doing what you thought, what stopped you- What is the one thing that would help you reach your goal? The focus group responses indicated overwhelmingly that young people want to be in steady, reliable and rewarding employment in order to obtain a comfortable standard of living. The 'Just One Thing' concept should be the catalyst for the development of a Latrobe Youth Choices Commitment. The commitment will be a publicly acknowledgement between business, government, the community and young people, inclusive of differences in ability, ethnicity, aboriginality and gender, to help young people to achieve their potential. The commitment will include- Advocacy and self advocacy - Mental health assistance - Mentoring - Education and training - Job application processes - Employment Can you remember who gave you your "break"?
