The AI Lab is an advanced research lab dedicated to developing confidence-aware and culturally-sensitive AI systems for high-stakes applications. Co-led by Katherine Elkins, a Principal Investigator at the NIST US AI Safety Institute and pioneering researcher in computational narratology, and Jon Chun, an AI systems architect and Silicon Valley entrepreneur, The AI Lab pioneers methodological innovations at the crucial intersection of AI safety, cultural preservation, and human-AI collaboration. Our unique interdisciplinary approach integrates deep technical expertise with a commitment to ethical deployment and cultural nuance, setting new standards for responsible AI. Current Research Initiatives: Confidence-aware AI systems with uncertainty quantification for authentic content detection Multi-agent ethical reasoning frameworks (AgenticSimLLM) Hypersuasion detection and mitigation methodologies Multimodal, multilingual AI architectures for culturally-sensitive analysis of historical materials Cross-modal narrative analysis connecting text, audio, and visual media across languages AI decision-making assessment in high-stakes contexts (e.g, juvenile justice, cultural heritage) Technical Innovation: We develop human-in-the-loop pipelines integrating domain expertise with state-of-the-art multimodal AI; implement temporal language adaptation for historical variants; and create cross-modal validation systems preserving cultural specificity across linguistic boundaries. Dr. Elkins' pioneering work in computational narratology (Cambridge University Press, 2022) established sentiment analysis methodologies now applied globally. The lab is the recent recipient of the IBM-Notre Dame Tech Ethics Lab grant ($60K). We are developing transferable frameworks for responsible AI deployment across diverse domains requiring cultural sensitivity, multilingual processing, and robust uncertainty management.
