We often associate the phrase “launching a business” with what appears to be rapid growth overnight start-ups, primarily in the technology and software industries. It is understandable, as a community we embrace and celebrate the success of bootstrap organizations and innovators. It gives aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners a dose of the one thing that allows us all to continue driving forward. I’ll leave it to you to fill in your own driving force. To some it’s hope, others it’s a bit of envy, or maybe the final kickstart that sparks their inspiration. Whatever the motivation it’s what keeps us moving the bar higher and higher. The only major problem with these amazing overnight success stories and industry disrupters that seem to appear out of nowhere is that they really don’t exist. To be fair there have been a few, but it is far from the norm. At the end of the day launching a business is not really about propelling towards the stars, finding uncharted space or business industries, or even the rocket icon we’ve all associated with it. Launching a business is more about everything that went into getting it to that point. Planning, prepping, partnering, hustling, learning, growing, making mistakes, and even failing.
