I started with my father in the late 80’s soldering prototype boards for 2nd generation Solid State Ballasts that he and his partner would develop, in the firm belief that they could save the world energy through reducing lighting consumption. They successfully developed one of the first electronic solid state ballasts in 1974 to (eventually) replace the current Magnetic or “Potted” Ballasts that were the main driver for T-12 fluorescent lamps of the day. They were innovators that helped change the lighting industry for the better, thereby, reducing electrical demand and saving the end user substantially in their electrical lighting usage. I always admired my father’s drive and didn’t realize the significance that lighting played in the overall expenditure of electricity until I went to work with him in 1996. We started a small Design/Manufacturing business creating CFL fixtures, and retrofit fixtures based in California, moving to Texas in 1997. We worked with customers interested in saving energy, switching from incandescent to compact fluorescent and enjoyed helping customers take advantage of the overall reduction in electrical consumption through automated controls (daylight harvesting, scheduling, task-tuning, load shedding). We followed LED lighting industry from early adopters and lack of reasonable ROI to the aggressive progression in materials cost reduction, improvements in Manufacturing processes, etc. Even with long life white LED’s coming out, we didn’t get a good feeling from a buy vs. payback forum of very trusted colleagues in the industry. In last few years, that has all changed, and the industry as a whole has far exceeded my clients’ expectations, returning not only purchase price (typically less than 24 months), but also helping a company’s bottom line through the life of their LED fixtures, often putting the savings realized into other areas of their budget (marketing, capital improvements, employee programs, etc.)
