Solar Gravitational Lens Telescope (SGLT) missions involve sending fleets of small-telescope & instrument-laden spacecraft deep into interstellar space in the opposite direction, relative to the sun, to where previously determined most-promising earth-like, potentially intelligent-life inhabited, exoplanets reside. Once the SGLT spacecraft reach the minimum 550+ Astronautical Unit (AU) SGL-focal region out in interstellar space, they look back at the Sun in a direct line-of-sight focal line to the earth-like exoplanet (with the Sun in-between) and – exploiting the remarkable optical properties of an SGL astronomical telescope – extract spectroscopy data on and a detailed direct megapixel high-resolution image of that exoplanet from the distorted exoplanet image & spectroscopy data contained in the Einstein ring, formed through gravitational lensing, that is visible around the Sun. And while an SGL telescope is theoretically feasible, the scope & precision-standards of the engineering, material science, propulsion, navigation, data transmission, & other challenges of an SGLT mission are unprecedented & will require substantial financial & human expertise resources in order to design spacecraft to operate at such vast distances from Earth & with the needed precision for SGLT data collection & for the transmission of the Einstein ring-displayed data on the exoplanet back to earth for analysis. With an SGLT mission being the only technologically viable means to directly observe, through high-resolution megapixel imaging, & assess the potential habitability of and unambiguously detect & study intelligent life-forms on an earth-like exoplanet – there's been growing public interest & enthusiasm about the possibilities & promise of a successful SGLT mission, not only with respect to finally having an answer to that age-old question of “Are we alone in the Universe?”, but also through ascribing new meaning & perspective for the human species on our place in the universe.
