Lived Heritage Studies provides solutions to inform non-profit and private/public sector communication strategies, placemaking efforts, and policy for heritage places in the US and internationally. Our work is informed through environmental psychology, community-based participatory research, and policy analyses. We believe in the value of local knowledge to create a more inclusive, equitable, and socially just historic preservation/heritage conservation practice that sustains people in place. Lived Heritage Studies Services Public sector / local, state, federal government • Audit an agency’s preservation laws, regulations, and guidelines to identify bias. • Facilitate community-driven reports that identify important values, meanings, and priorities. Private sector / design, planning, and real estate development firms • Review of the literature and case studies from the social sciences, planning, design, and participatory research disciplines to empirically inform planning and/or design issues. • Create custom applied social science and/or participatory research projects for planning and/or design strategies. • Analyze an organization’s marketing materials to provide specific advice on how to better target a specific heritage market. • Develop custom studies that will engage potential real estate clients to understand their unique motivations and desires in relation to living or working in older properties. Non-profit sector • Analyze marketing materials to help understand how different constituencies may react to these materials and how messages should change in order to achieve specific goals, including fund raising. • Test market ideas before they are launched. Education sector • Audit a preservation program’s preservation/conservation curriculum and provide recommendations for change. • Develop custom learning components with suggested lesson plans that focus on people- and human-centered historic preservation/built heritage conservation.
