MAHDIYYAH is a Sustainable Fashion Brand, with a unique focus on one of one upcycled apparel items created from discarded cotton, linen, and wool. The idea of Fabric Alchemy, which the brand notes as it’s perspective and practice, involves upcycling discarded 100% cotton, 100% linen, and 100% wool clothing found at local secondhand and thrift. Each design is intentionally created as a mono material item for the purpose of considering its life cycle and ensuring the wearer receives the full benefits of a garment constructed solely from natural materials. More recently, MAHDIYYAH has implored a zero waste design approach, making use of all leftover and throwaway scrap materials through the practice of mechanical recycling. MAHDIYYAH apparel has appeared in the likes of Forbes, Vogue, and shows like The Tamron Hall Show, Showtime’s The Chi, and FuseTV Upcycle Nation season one. Additionally, the brand has collaborated with the likes of Shirt King Phade of The Mighty Shirt Kings, April Walker of Walker Wear, and Notoriouss Clothing on limited collections to name a few. Through collective outreach, MAHDIYYAH has partnered with organizations like Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, East New York Farms, and Brooklyn Grange Farms to bring educational fabric workshops, mentorship initiatives for youth, curriculum design focusing on sustainable approaches to fashion education, and events providing a platform to more black and indigenous individuals doing work within the arts that intersects with sustainability, community, nature, and conscious consumption.
