Medula Art Design

Aiming to expand access to works of art, the Medula studio was created by artist Josafá Neves in 2017, with the goal of encouraging new art collectors. The studio not only brings an affordable cost, but also seeks to value the aesthetic appreciation of African-Brazilian art, which is a landmark and strength present in Josafá Neves' work. The artist establishes a link, a memory, an ancestry in his work, which retells the history of black people from their own narratives. It is in this breath of the breathing that comes from Africa that his work dialogues. Art in African cosmo-perception has the functionality to establish the community's well-being, it has ritualistic, ethical, sacred, and energetic value. Thus, the artistic object leads us to a connection with our heart, with our community, with our ancestor. The value is in the affirmation of the vital force that exists in our circularity, since life is interconnected to everything. It is also in this perspective that Medula brings its concept of art, thought to create links and connections between art and the community. And to empower art as an agent southing (points the way in a view from the South) in favor of movement, liberation, and intellectual advancement of black people. In this project, Josafá Neves creates works of art in limited and exclusive editions for the brand. The pieces are numbered and signed by the artist. With manual and handmade production, or semi-indutrial and reproducible, the format of the artistic objects carries the African aesthetic paradigm in which art is in the making of a spoon, a stool, a chalice, a cloth, a sculpture, a musical instrument, and in the body. The poetics of this art making brings beauty, care, and zeal to the center, in a world where everything is art. In the context of the Afro-Brazilian diaspora, Medula resignifies its ties and roots that resume its movement based on this aesthetic, sensorial, and affective knowledge.
