MENTOA Limited was founded by Mahuru Robinson who was passionate about education and supporting young Māori men to succeed in life. Mahuru worked in the education sector for over 23 years having graduated as a teacher of Bilingual Education in 1996. Since his time in education, Mahuru taught at a primary, secondary and tertiary level, worked in the alternative education and youth justice sectors, and worked for the Ministry of Education as a Senior Advisor. MENTOA has over time, grown its client base by bringing on other mentors also passionate about growing successful, strong and resilient young Māori men. MENTOA programmes are built on a strong foundation of Te Reo me ona Tikanga Māori. The team at MENTOA are highly motivated and skilled practitioners of their respective areas of expertise and in all instances MENTOA understands the need for every young person to have a champion in their lives - someone that will never give up on them, who understands the power of relationships, of being connected to the world they live in and the world they come from. It’s about ‘rites of passage’ for our young Māori men and ‘demystifying the belief’ that society has already failed them because of their cultural identity. Being Māori is something they should be proud of. We achieve this by providing mentors who have done exactly that – demystified the belief and become successful at what they have achieved through their own lives. MENTOA specialises in working with young Māori men aged 10yrs and above by providing mentoring programmes grounded in tikanga Māori. Through this approach, MENTOA then works with the young men to identify successful education pathways that will support them into further education, training and employment.
