Mep Scribes

MEP Health employs exceptional pre-health students as scribes at the St. Mary's Hospital (Madison), Janesville St. Mary's, Upland Hills Health (Dodgeville) and St. Clare Hospital (Baraboo) emergency departments to assist with real-time documentation in the electronic medical record. This mutually beneficial relationship allows MEP physicians to improve efficiency and throughput while providing pre-health students with valuable one-on-one clinical experience working alongside board-certified emergency physicians. Many of our former scribes have gone on to allopathic medical schools, osteopathic medical schools, physician assistant schools, and physical therapy schools. The Emergency Department Scribe is an unlicensed individual who works one-on-one with board certified emergency physicians assisting with documentation of the assessment and care of emergency patients. The Scribe collaborates with the emergency physician to document the patient history, physical exam, results of diagnostic testing, and diagnosis and disposition The primary role of the medical scribe is to assist the Emergency Department (ED) physician with documentation of each patient’s medical chart during his or her stay in the ED. The scribe accompanies the physician into the patient examination area in order to transcribe a history and physical examination as given by the patient and physician. The scribe completes the patient’s chart by transcribing results of any labs, x-rays, or other evaluations. The scribe lists all proper diagnoses as well as any discharge/follow up instructions and prescriptions, under guidance of the physician.
