Microbial Medical is introducing a family of novel diagnostic and therapeutic agents that target bacterial infection utilizing a sugar as a carrier to focus existing medical compounds on bacteria. Bacteria readily internalize the sugar as an energy source, while human cells reject it. Medical compounds that are conjugated (covalently bonded) to the sugar are likewise drawn into bacteria and excluded from human cells. The underlying technology, which is protected by multiple pending patents and validated in prominent scientific journals, is based on research at Emory University, UC-Berkeley, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State.
