Before, during and after career changes, professionals often feel lost, as many had not really planned for any changes, both professionally and privately. However, change is immanent and action needs to be taken, rather sooner than later under the circumstances. My life would probably have taken a different path with more opportunities, had I had mentors that were not my surgical trainers; mentors, who had the experience from within the system, but were not my colleagues at work, nor friends; mentors who had experienced failure. Why should you care? For many, it is not at all clear that we all are leaders, not only on the job, but also in our community, in our private lives. Looking back on 35yrs. as a urological surgeon in different countries, I realized that I had not only been trained to be a highly specialized urologist, but also that I had acquired a broad training, coaching and entrepreneurial expertise while working as a surgical trainer/proctor, career coach and mentor for physicians and other professionals. And this knowledge and experience is what I continuously pass on to younger professionals in- and outside medicine, who understand the importance of their role as leaders.
