Mobile Devices Laboratory

MDL focuses on scientific research on Web and Mobile Computing, Big Data Management and Multi-Objective Optimisation methods that exploit Cloud technologies for engineering Smart Systems. MDL lays emphasis on Ubiquitous, Mobile and Natural Interaction Devices, including system on chip, sensors and actuators, for the development of smart and cloud-enabled systems. MDL also applies ICT technologies for the design and development of platforms, software tools and mobile applications for solving societal challenges. In specific, it develops smart and personalised ICT-based environments for e-learning, for supporting elders and people with disabilities, for raising awareness and developing counteracting measures against social issues faced by children and migrants, and for health monitoring and support. As part of e-learning MDL personnel has very good experience in development of platforms for Open and Distance Learning and Life Long Learning (OLMEdu – coordinator – Erasmus+, BCT4SMEs – partner – Erasmus+, VALS Erasmus LLP project), as well as the coordination of student mobility actions (3 Erasmus Mundus projects – LEADERS, STRONG-TIES, INTACT). MDL has established collaborations with several software companies securing various industrial grants, such as the Microsoft Open Government Data Initiative Grant. MDL published more than 20 multi-platform applications, some of which won the local Microsoft Hackathon Competitions in 2012, 2015, the National Microsoft Imagine cup competitions in 2015, 2016, and were ranked in the top-33 in World Online Semi-final and participated in the World Final (Seattle, USA – 2016). MDL consists of modern equipment and deals with a wide range of cutting-edge technologies related to the cloud, web, smart devices, social media, gaming and natural interaction devices. This includes a mobile cloud of 40+ Smartphones and Tablets, cabinet/rack-mounted CISCO routers and switches, a structured internal computer network for pilot testbeds, a number.
