Mourning Our Losses
Mourning Our Losses is a national volunteer organization that memorializes those who have died while living or working behind bars during the COVID-19 pandemic and advocates for the release of incarcerated people across the U.S. We are a group of educators, organizers, advocates, and students — many of us formerly incarcerated — committed to the end of mass incarceration. We write, edit, and translate humanizing memorials of those who have passed; reach out to their loved ones both inside and outside of facilities to host their remembrances; maintain a comprehensive record of deaths behind bars; collaborate across the walls to feature writing and artwork by our currently incarcerated volunteers; and share our work in order to raise awareness and campaign for the release of our people.
