Mukti is an organization formed in 2020, with the commitment to help those who are affected by substance use. Use of substances like alcohol and tobacco (both smoking and non-smoking forms) have serious implications not only on the health of an individual or his/her family but also on the society at large. According to WHO, tobacco use, alone, is the direct or indirect cause for about 1 million deaths in India. Studies suggest a concerning figure of 14 million people in India, who can be described as ‘dependent’ on alcohol and in need of help. Comprising of about 70 members from medical, engineering and other academic backgrounds, Mukti aims to diminish the impacts of substance use on community by 1. Creating awareness through psychoeducational videos and posters – not only about the adverse effects of various substances, but also about various measures which can be taken to combat it. On-call counselling by medical students trained and supervised by psychiatrists using an evidence-based approach and guidelines recommended by WHO.
