Occupational Therapy is a blend of art and science concerned with the "occupation" of daily living. Occupation is a term that is most often reserved for employment or on the job skills; however, to an occupational therapist, occupation is "any skills needed for the job of living." Some of these living skills include: dressing, grooming, toileting, bathing, self feeding, meal preparation, home making, caring for children, caring for pets, shopping for groceries, driving, maintaining safety, etc."Play" is also a child's work and an occupational therapist who works with children is interested in helping a child to develop play skills for development. Occupational Therapy treatment modalities include, but are not limited to: Sensory Integrative Techniques, Floor Time, Handwriting Without Tears, SOS Feeding strategies, Social Thinking concepts, Craniosacral Therapy and Neurodevelopmental Techniques. Occupational Therapy evaluation and treatment of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and primary school children. Children treated may be challenged by behavioral difficulties, developmental differences such as gross and fine motor delays, difficulty focusing and attending, perceptual impairments, illegible handwriting and dyspraxia (lack of motor planning). A variety of sensory motor equipment is available. Children with the following diagnosis typically benefit from O.T services:* Developmental Delay * Perceptual Motor Delay * Visual Perceptual Delay * Feeding difficulties/disorders * Sensory Integrative Dysfunction * Dysgraphia (moderate handwriting difficulty)* Gross Motor Planning Problems (uncoordinated)* Fine Motor Planning Problems * Attentional Difficulties * Autism Spectrum Disorders (PDD, Asperger's Syndrome, etc)* Neurological Impairments resulting in delay of skill development * Genetic Disorders resulting in delay of skill development * Prematurity
