National Mentoring Consortium

The National Mentoring Consortium is a professional organisation that strives to make a change in the lives of Ethnic minorities and dyslexics undergraduates in our society. Since the NMC was founded in 1994, following a successful two-year pilot scheme at the University of East London, it has grown to include over 300 employers and 15 universities across the UK. We have been supported by the CBI, the Institute of Directors, the Chartered institute of Personnel and Development and the Commission for Racial Equality. Throughout our history, we have run schemes at every level of the education system as well as for the unemployed and young offenders. The contribution of ethnic minorities can no longer be overlooked, and in future, the prosperity of the country will depend on full participation of all sections of the community in all areas of working life-including management and executive roles. As a result, the National Mentoring Consortium is here to help deliver this change. We are currently running an Ethnic Minority Undergraduate Scheme (EMUS) which involves the pairing up of students in a one-to-one mentoring relationship with staff members of employer organisations in business, law and the public sector. This scheme runs for six months; from October/November through to April/May. Following an induction and training event, participants will have mentoring meetings (two 1 hour sessions) monthly, usually at the mentor's workplace. Upon the completion of the scheme, an award ceremony will be held with a high profile guest speaker. NOTE: Participation in the scheme will be beneficial to both mentees and mentors. It will improve mentees' personal and professional skills and prepare them for the world of work while mentors find personal development and fulfillment by sharing their skills and experiences.
