To accomplish this mission, we've researched the emergent technologies and trends that apply to the questions; how far? and how fast? can a given boat go under electric propulsion. The answers are that we are at a technology inflection point that makes electric and hybrid propulsion a viable solution for many vessels. These newer technologies include compact and efficient brushless motors, improvements in safety and energy density in battery technology, as well as, more efficient charging capabilities seen in solar, wind and hydro generation. Much of this newer tech has come out of advances in the automotive sector. Although the power challenges of rolling across a flat road on wheels is different than pushing a displacement hull through the water, there is much that can be leveraged here. How it applies depends on the boat, it's LWL, displacement, and how you use it i.e. long distance cruising vs. just powering off and on to the dock. As they say,"your mileage may vary.". Suffice it say, however, that some combination of full electric or hybrid technologies can meet many boating applications that we've come across.
