Nycd Emerald Society

The New York City Correction Department Emerald Society was founded in 1955 by James W. Mulvey and is the second oldest Law Enforcement Emerald Society in the nation. The NYPD Emerald Society was founded in 1953. The society is made up of active/retired Members of the Uniform Force and Civilian Staff of the New York City Department who are of Irish Lineage. Uniform Members are designated by the New York State Penal Law as Peace Officers who have the power of arrest (on or off duty), entitled to carry firearms and patrol the toughest precincts in New York City (The City Jails). The civilian members are made up of tradesman, logistical, support and adminstrative personnel who's service is invaluable in the overall operation of the Department.
