Okehampton United Charities

Okehampton United Charity (registered charity number 202686) was formed as a charitable trust in 1873 when a scheme ordered by the Charity Commission brought together six charities which benefited the inhabitants of Okehampton and the Hamlets. The Charity managed a number of land holdings in the Okehampton area and its income was used to provide general charitable benefits in Okehampton and its four Hamlets. Sales of land for development in 2001 and 2005 have created an investment fund which provides a substantial income. In 1910 a separate charity, Okehampton Educational Foundation was created to provide educational benefits in the same area, in 2022 Okehampton Education Foundation was merged into Okehampton United Charity. The charity has operated as an unincorporated charitable trust for over 150 years and the trustees have now resolved that the charity should be converted into a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) as defined in the Charities Act 2011. The Charity Commission have approved the change to a CIO to take effect on 31st December 2024. The CIO will have a new name; Okehampton Foundation (registered charity number 1210636) however the day-to-day operations of the charity will continue to use the name Okehampton United Charities and the charitable objects and the current trustees will remain exactly the same as they are now.
