Papakura Museum

Papakura Museum is a regional museum located in South Auckland, New Zealand. The Museum was founded by the Papakura District Historical Society, and opened in the 1980s. 10 years ago, the building in which the Museum is located underwent structural redevelopment, and we moved into a new, modern, renovated space. Papakura Museum displays exhibitions that are engaging and relevant to the community we are situated in. Our permanent gallery space, The Story of Papakura, explores the history of the region including European colonisation, Māori history, military involvement, industry, innovation, conflict, town and country, and more. In the centre of our Museum, we have an exhibition space that houses touring exhibitions, and these change every two to four months. Our exhibition space located at the back of our Museum is currently displaying an exhibition borrowed from Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum, Home Front. Though much of the exhibition content is similar to the exhibit displayed at Auckland Museum, we have tied the stories back to Papakura with a local focus, and centres around families in the region and their involvement with World War One. Once this exhibition is completed, we will work towards developing this space into a permanent military gallery.
