POPES Electrical & Data Supplies Pty Ltd was founded by John Pope in 1979 and was called John Pope Electrical Pty Ltd. John Pope Electrical was based in Fyshwick, Canberra, and was a niche electrical wholesaler business. Canberra couple Daryl and Wendy Read purchased this business in December 2002 and changed the name to POPES Electrical & Data Supplies in 2005. When purchasing the business, Daryl and Wendy aimed to maintain the existing niche market of industrial control equipment while expanding into the domestic and commercial electrical, lighting and data markets. This plan has been carefully executed with new stores opening in the Canberra suburbs of Mitchell (2003) and Phillip (2009). Most recently POPES relocated its Mitchell store to larger premises in 2011 to adequately handle the growth they were experiencing at that branch. In 2003 POPES Electrical & Data Supplies became a member of the Gemcell Electrical Group. Membership of this buying group ensures POPES receives the best prices on the best brands and is able to compete on price with all of its multinational competitors. POPES also has a dedicated project estimating team, based in Fyshwick, which provides competitive quotes and excellent service on projects of all sizes in the electrical, lighting and data markets.
