Prevent The Bite

Prevent The Bite program teaches children how to interact with dogs safely while appreciating the human-animal bond. We are a national organization with acceptance and endorsement by some of the most respected medical and professional associations that exist, including the AVMA, US Postal Service, Association of Plastic Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics. Although no longer a nonprofit organization, Prevent The Bite is still devoted to reducing the incidence of dog bites to children. In Kelly Voigt, then seven, was attacked by a neighborhood dog. She received about 100 stitches in her face and throat and later suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. To aid in her recovery, Kelly and her mother Kathy began giving dog safety presentations to her classmates. Soon they were presenting in other schools, then in other states. In 2004 the nonprofit Prevent The Bite (PTB) was formed. Created with the help of a school psychologist and animal assisted therapist, Prevent The Bite's curriculum meets the national standards of education. Using simple phrases and illustrations, the techniques are easy for children of all ages to understand AND retain.
