In whilst watching the news about Kosovo, Ben Beveridge noticed soldiers trying to build a sandbag barrier to hide behind. They were using the old 2-man system: Slow, and using an extra man, who really could be more useful holding a rifle rather than a sandbag. What was needed was a way to fill the sandbags using only 1 man, and to fill the bags much more quickly. From that kernel of awareness grew the SandHopper, and with military input, it became the design you see today. The SandHopper has seen service in the field with both UK, and USA forces. The SandHopper became so much appreciated in the US that it is now a ‘requirement’. This means no forward engineers kit can be deployed without a SandHopper in it. Somewhere along the line it became obvious that using a SandHopper was an obvious choice for any sandbag filling. With a SandHopper, to fill a sandbag only 1 man is needed, and he can do that job much faster, much easier, and much more safely. Now SandHoppers are used in flood protection and the construction industry, around the world. We hope to hear from those who are interested in flood protection that has been seen to work, and that which didn’t live up to expectations. We would like to know the many ways the construction industry is using sandbags. We know from feedback that sandbags are still very often the first line of defence against flooding. Because they are inexpensive and versatile. They can be easy to fill. They can be quickly deployed.
