Psychotherapy Trends
Psychotherapy Trends, like many ideas, began out of a desire and need. How does a clinician stay current? It's hard to keep up with current research. Today's media is pumping out information on talk shows and magazines that supposedly represent current trends in science when it comes to psychotherapy but they are not always accurately representing the research or cherry picking the research that seems most provocative. Many of our clients are researching drugs, supplements, and treatments expecting us to know just as much and more than they do. Ultimately though, we want to stay current because we want to know how to do our job better. This newsletter targets clinicians. The research selection and summarization is done by qualified and actively practicing psychotherapists. We comb the databases several times a quarter selecting, assessing, and summarizing any peer reviewed research that seems relevant to those in practice. Sometimes our issues revolve around a topic such as depression or eating disorders. Other times it may be more general in nature, depending upon the research that we find. Psychotherapy Trends attempts to provide you with the latest research on supplementation, interventions (such as EMDR or meditation), neurological understanding, working with specific populations or issues, etc. Our primary selection criteria is whether or not it is current and applicable to those conducting psychotherapy. The summaries are intended to provide the basic information necessary to evaluate the research and understand its implications for practice. Our editorial staff will do additional research in order to fill in any gaps, such as defining terms, explaining theories, or outlining previous research if we feel that the article itself would not be clear to the clinician reading the summary.
