Pvc Art

I work as a freelance artist. My works are made from PVC fabric, cord and stitching and are available to buy or loan. The sculptures are made from found objects, pvc fabric, cord and stitching. Before taking my degree, I trained in soft furnishings and upholstery. I am interested in the boundaries between needlework and art, embroidery and paint, trying to break new ground, whilst still retaining the context and ideology of painting. My sculptures are about transformation and identity. Using very mundane found objects and making them into something visually and aesthetically pleasing. They can be interpreted as artifacts, preserving an object by way of covering,nurturing and protecting. The tactile surface is created with the use of piping cord and stitching. The abstraction of the paintings are evocative of ideas of Pop Art, the use of repitition akin to the work of artists such as the geometric works of Bridget Riley and other modern contemporaries who use format, like Sol-Le-Witt. Colours come from an interest in the cat walk fashion and architecture. When we think of plastic, we think of all kinds of cheap reproductions, but with my skills as a needlewomen as well as a painter, I have altered the whole idea of thinking. I trained in soft furnishings and upholstery, and my mother taught me the skills of embroidery at a very young age, including smocking which is evident in my work.
