R. Tucker Thompson

The R Tucker Thompson Sail Training Trust is a not for profit organisation which operates a gaff rigged tops'l schooner. Our organisation is dedicated to delivering a variety of learning opportunities using a fun, adventurous, and non-threatening environment. The Trust aims to seek the potential in every young person we cater for, and encourage them to put it on display. Respect for self, peers and others is paramount in our philosophy of nurturing positive citizens in all of our communities. During the New Zealand winter, between April and November, the Trust runs a number of 7-day sail training voyages. These trips are considered a life-changing experience for those young people fortunate enough to participate. They are of sufficient length to make a change in the attitude of the young person and provide the type of life skills that enable the young person to gain confidence. Between November and and Easter, the ship operates a range of tourism activities including day sails in the Bay of Islands, late afternoon sailings, weddings, school trips and other private charters. These commercial activities help us to cross subsidise our youth activities as well as keep the ship in top condition.
